This picture shows the problem:  the RX7 shifter, in the Spitfire, is positioned too far back.
The simplest solution is to just change the extension housing with that off a '91-'92 Ford Bronco II, or Ranger 2WD.  Both shared the same transmission, the MD51.  Of course, it isn't easy to find this tail housing, and it proved impossible for me.
The next best solution was to take the shifter assembly to a fabricator and have it modified.
The shifter box was modified by Attila Weiser, of Weiser Engineering, Northglenn, Colorado.
